As i was bought up in the country, and am now travelling through the outback. The most important service to know is:
- no not your mobile carrier – kinda important.
- Pin numbers – Again kinda important.
- First Aid – Important
- Breakdown ( RAA) extra important
But apart from your own personal safety is :
THE ROYAL FLYING DOCTORS SERVICE
This is the service that operates through out Australia; and at times out to sea. It brings doctors clinics, nurses and medical services to towns and communities that are otherwise isolated. It is, also, the terrific team who will pick you up in an emergency and get you to the nearest big hospital for attention.
I visited this important service in Broken Hill At the Bruce Langford Visitor Centre. There you will get up close and hands on with the history of the first Flying Doctors to the modern day planes and people. On my guided tour I saw two planes being ‘readied’ for their trips to smaller communities on the monthly medical clinic runs. Whilst in Windorah I saw this medical clinic arrive in town and bring not only a GP but a dentist, midwife, and the quarterly visit of an oncologist; to this far way community.
They are one of Australias’ biggest registered charities and along with the Westpac Rescue choppers provide invaluable unsurmountable good for all of us.
